(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, AUG 31 - "The threat, formerly from the Soviet Union, today from Russia, has the same character. The war is being fought not far from here, against this new version of the evil empire. This place has an additional symbolic weight." Donald Tusk quoted Ronald Reagan's famous definition of the USSR during his meeting with EU commission chairwoman Ursula von der Leyen along the Polish border with Belarus. "Tomorrow we celebrate the anniversary of the outbreak of the most tragic war, World War II. Not far from here German troops, Hitler's troops, met in a brotherly embrace with Soviet troops when they invaded -- Germany and Russia -- Poland. There is no talking to Moscow. The war in Ukraine and the last weeks and days show this very clearly: no concessions, no subtle games with Putin and aggressive Russia lead to success, do not guarantee us security. Poland, Europe, NATO, the United States must be united again, just like they used to be, just like 45 years. The 'West must give us all its support as it did when "Solidarity" was born. Even today," the Polish premier concluded, "they must be very firm, determined, united against this new version of the evil empire." (ANSA).
