Italy, 13 countries ask 'innovative solutions' on migrants

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 26 - On the sidelines of the European Council, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, along with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, hosted a new informal meeting of some EU Member States most interested in the topic of innovative solutions to be applied to the management of the migratory phenomenon, particularly the strengthening of the legal framework on repatriations. Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, and Hungary attended the meeting, which also included Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the European Commission. Ursula von der Leyen - according to a note from Palazzo Chigi - illustrated the Commission's main lines of work in the field of migration, focussing in particular on the state of progress of negotiations relating to the most recent legislative proposals in the field of migration, beginning with the new "Return Regulation," while also confirming the convening of a new Summit of the Global Coalition against migrant smuggling for December 10 in Brussels.
