(ANSA) - BELGRADE, AUG 14 - The Slovenian newspaper Dnevnik says that people smugglers, whose numbers are increasing steadily, had missed the message the former government had wanted to send when longer prison sentences were passed in 2020. Instead, the legislative changes have contributed to acutely overcrowded prisons. The prosecution of smugglers has put additional strain on criminal courts, with these cases taking precedence over other matters. The Democrats (SDS) and New Slovenia (NSi), now in opposition, claimed in 2020 that longer prison sentences would send a message to smugglers, Dnevnik recalled. (ANSA).
