General Committee on Political and Home Affairs of CEI Parliamentary Dimension Meets in Rome

On 6-7 April, CEI Secretary General, Amb. Gerhard Pfanzelter attended the meeting of the General Committee on Political and Home Affairs of the CEI Parliamentary Dimension in Rome. The meeting, focussing on “Development Prospects of CEI”,  was chaired by the Head of the Italian Delegation at the CEI Parliamentary Assembly, Hon. Roberto Antonione who stressed the importance of the CEI as a tool for promoting European integration through regional cooperation by acting as a bridge between macro-regions.

The President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Hon. Gianfranco Fini, who welcomed the participants, confirmed Italy’s strong commitment to regional cooperation in Central and South Eastern Europe through the Central European Initiative.   Attended by parliamentarians of 15 CEI countries, the meeting adopted a Final Declaration to be discussed at the Parliamentary Committee in Belgrade on 20 May 2011.   The document recommends to further strengthen CEI-EU relations, to reflect on the territorial dimension of the CEI and to organise a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Serbia, Montenegro and Ukraine and Italy (the “Enlarged Troika”) with the Chairpersons of the Parliamentary delegations of these Countries on 10 June in Trieste.   The Meeting was closed by Undersecretary of State, Sen. Alfredo Mantica, who reaffirmed the CEI’s crucial role as a key actor in the region and a bridge between macro-regions.
