Regional initiative promotes citizen engagement in circular economy and waste recycling in CEI countries

On 14 March 2025, a regional workshop on citizen engagement in circular economy and waste recycling was held in Hîncești, Moldova. Complementary awareness-raising and pilot activities were implemented in Dyrdyn village, Ukraine, involving local authorities, civil society organisations, schools and community representatives from CEI countries.

The initiative aimed to strengthen public awareness, cross-border exchange and practical cooperation on waste separation and recycling, supporting citizen involvement in circular economy practices and fostering more sustainable environmental behaviours at a local level.

The WiSDOM Association spearheaded an initiative that emphasised the promotion of separate collection and recycling of paper, glass and bio-waste. This initiative was achieved through the implementation of educational campaigns, demonstrations and the transfer of good practices among Moldova, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania. Particular attention was given to involving schools, local communities and NGOs as drivers of long-term behavioural change.

The programme included radio broadcasts, educational campaigns and public surveys in Moldova, alongside demonstration activities and equipment testing in Ukraine, where innovative solutions such as briquette production from organic and paper waste were showcased. A regional workshop enabled participants to exchange experiences on recycling practices, community engagement and low-cost solutions, leading to recommendations for harmonising waste separation approaches across participating countries.

“Enhancing environmental protection, risk reduction and resilience in the CEI region is crucial in light of increasing environmental pressures linked to climate change and resource overexploitation. Reducing pollution, limiting environmental degradation and supporting mitigation and adaptation measures are therefore essential for future prosperity."

In this context, the CEI promotes the responsible use of environmental resources, resilience and cultural change, supporting initiatives that contribute to sustainable development for present and future generations.”
