Event - United Nations High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development 2026

Start date
Location
New York (USA)

The CEI-Executive Secretariat and the Romanian CEI Presidency, through the Permanent Mission of Romania to the UN, are organising a side event in the framework of the United Nations High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development 2026 in New York.

Entitled “Sustainable Infrastructure in the CEI Region: Regional Cooperation as a Driver for SDG Implementation”, the event is included in the High-Level Ministerial Segment of the HLPF (13 July, from 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Conference Room 9), providing an important opportunity to bring the perspective of the CEI region to one of the key global platforms for sustainable development. The event is co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Italy, Serbia and Ukraine to the United Nations.

The discussion will aim to highlight the added value of regional cooperation in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on how coordinated action, capacity building and enhanced connectivity can support the development of sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Special attention will be given to connectivity-related initiatives through an integrated approach. By linking key connectivity dimensions – such as sustainable transport, water management and energy security – to the SDGs under review (SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17), the discussion will highlight both regional infrastructure vulnerabilities and concrete examples of cooperation in the context of current geopolitical challenges and climate change. The event will further illustrate how regional cooperation can help translate needs into tangible results and accelerate the achievement of the SDGs by examining the practical implementation of projects and initiatives. It will also underline the role of international coordination and financing in support of sustainable regional infrastructure.
