Serbia: army, 'we will not allow any coup attempt'

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 10 - In Serbia, on the eve of a large protest of the opposition, the army said it would not allow any coup attempt. ''The Army's message to everybody, in the country and abroad, is that the military is not and will not be a tool to overthrow the legitimate authorities in Serbia, through the violent demolition of the constitutional order'', reads a statement released at the end of a joint meeting of the heads of the Ministry of Defense and the Army Chief-of-Staff. The opposition, which has been demonstrating every weekend against president Aleksandar Vucic and the government since December, has convened a large gathering in Belgrade in front of the Houses of Parliament, to be held on Saturday. Uprisings and clashes with the police have been happening in the last few weeks. The press release issued by the army leadership also refers to the situation in Kosovo, where ''security challenges'' have grown with the imposition of customs duties on Serbian imports, increased by 100%, and the formation of a paramilitary group. The situation is closely monitored by the Army in order to protect the Kosovo Serbs. The military, therefore, pointed out that ''KFOR and the international community, in general, are primarily responsible for the peace and security of all residents in Kosovo''. (ANSA).
