(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 12 - With the implementation of the EU Migration and Asylum Pact, Europe enters "a new era," according to Cypriot Deputy Minister for Migration Nicholas Ioannides, who arrived at the informal ministerial conference on the EU Migration Pact currently taking place in Cyprus. "Today is a watershed moment for all of Europe. We've been waiting for this date for a long time, after years of talks and two years of planning', the Deputy Minister said on behalf of the rotating EU Presidency. "The entry into force of the Pact marks only the beginning, not the end. We must work hard to make it future-proof, functional, and a success. Today we are here to celebrate, but we are also aware that we must continue to work hard to achieve our objectives," he said. "It is a great achievement," he said, "but there may be some drawbacks, some errors that we will have to correct." Ioannides then downplayed Hungary and Poland's disagreements with the Pact, particularly the solidarity mechanism: "No member state has explicitly stated that it will not implement the Pact." There may be some disagreements, but we are all essentially on the same page." (ANSA).
