Kosovo, Thaci faces new trial in The Hague for obstruction of justice

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, FEB 17 - Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci will face a second trial in The Hague on February 27th, along with four co-defendants, his KLA associates, on charges of obstruction of justice and witness tampering. Thaci and three other former KLA leaders have been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity during the 1998-1999 Kosovo war by the International Special Court on Kosovo (officially known as the Specialised Chambers on Kosovo) in the Dutch capital since 2023. The trial has recently entered its final phase, with the prosecution seeking 45-year prison sentences for him and the other three defendants. The second trial focuses on attempts to influence the outcome of the first. According to the indictment, between April 12, 2023 and November 2, 2023, during several visits to the Scheveningen prison centre, just outside The Hague, Thaçi allegedly provided the other defendants—Bashkim Smakaj, Isni Kilaj, Fadil Fazliu, and Hajredin Kuçi—with confidential information about witnesses called by the prosecution in the war crimes trial, instructing them on how to "influence their testimony and providing them with detailed instructions on how to proceed (ANSA).
