Orbán renominated, but polls raise doubts

(ANSA) - BUDAPEST, 10 GEN - At an extraordinary congress, Hungary's ruling party, Fidesz, confirmed Viktor Orbán as its lead candidate and nominee for prime minister in the upcoming April elections. The congress also introduced the party's 106 candidates for single-member districts. Since 2010, Orbán has won four elections with a two-thirds majority, but this time his victory is threatened by a strong challenger, Péter Magyar, who leads the new party Tisza (Honor and Freedom). Tisza has already presented its slate of candidates, most of whom are political newcomers. There are many new faces among Fidesz candidates as well, with some previously discredited figures being sidelined. Orbán expressed confidence in victory, stating, "Our goal is to repeat the 2022 result." His platform includes promises of no tax increases, no funding for the war in Ukraine, and assurances that Hungarian soldiers will not be sent to the Ukrainian front. However, polls show Tisza leading by 8-10 percent. Analysts note that in Hungary's mixed electoral system, results in single-member, first-past-the-post districts are more critical than overall party-list percentages. (ANSA).
