Montenegro reinstates visa requirements for Turkish citizens

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, OCT 30 - Montenegro has reinstated visa requirements for Turkish citizens travelling to the Balkan country today. The Podgorica government made this decision in response to a recent series of incidents and provocations involving members of the local Turkish community. These incidents have exacerbated inter-ethnic tensions in Montenegro, which is home to approximately 13,000 Turks. Police arrested several Turkish and Azerbaijani citizens after they attacked and injured a young Montenegrin man in the capital Podgorica last weekend. Incidents followed, with Turkish citizens' vehicles damaged and Turkish-owned shops and premises set on fire in Podgorica, Bar, and Herceg Novi. According to regional media, Montenegrin authorities have decided to temporarily suspend the current visa liberalisation regime with Turkey in light of the escalating tensions. (ANSA).
