Slovenia, farmers urged to use preventive measures

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, SEP 23 - Slovenia's veterinary authorities have urged pig farmers in Slovenia to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures and hunters and visitors to Croatia to exercise extreme caution following a major outbreak of African swine fever in the neighbouring country, according to Slovenian news agency STA on Monday. The disease was discovered in a facility in Croatia with approximately 10,000 pigs, all of which will have to be culled to prevent its spread, the Slovenian Food Safety, Veterinary Sector, and Plant Protection Administration announced on Monday. The authorities urged Slovenian breeders to strictly comply with precaution measures such as consistent use of protective clothing and footwear when working with animals, disinfection of hands, equipment, and footwear, restricting access to farms by unauthorised persons, installing disinfection barriers at the entrance to barns, preventing contact between domestic and wild pigs, purchasing animals from verified farms, and isolating new animals before including them in the herd, STA wrote.
