Kosovo ends deadlock, new parliamentary leader elected

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, AUG 26 - After more than four months of deadlock and 57 failed elections, Kosovo's new parliament, which was formed on February 9th, elected its speaker today. Dimal Basha, a member of parliament from the ruling Vetevendosje (Self-Determination, Nationalist Left) party, will serve as Speaker of the Assembly after receiving 73 votes. The election required a minimum quorum of 61 votes, which all candidates proposed since April 15th, the day of the new parliament's first constituent session, have failed to achieve. This marked the start of a protracted tug-of-war between the ruling and opposition forces. A group of MPs from the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) also voted for Basha, who had been proposed as a candidate in recent days but was rejected. (ANSA).
