Albania fire emergency, south also evacuates tourists

(ANSA) - TIRANA, JUL 27 - Dramatic situation in Albania where for three days people have been battling fires, almost all over the country. The situation in the seaside resort of Borsh, in the south of the country on the Ionian coast, is critical. Flames that have been burning since last night have advanced toward homes and hotels. In the morning, 40 people, including tourists, were evacuated, according to the Albanian Ministry of Defense. More than 200 civil defense, firefighting and even military units are engaged in firefighting operations. Two army helicopters are also helping them. Under control is the situation in Kanina near Vlora, also in the south of the country, where a pastor was arrested overnight for arson. An Italian civil defense Canadair has arrived in Albania to help local authorities in the seaside resort of Borsh, where flames have been besieging settlements since last night. In the morning 40 people, including tourists, were evacuated. The aircraft from Italy was sent as part of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, of which Albania is a member. (ANSA).
