(ANSA) - SOFIA, 04 LUG - The Bulgarian government, led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov of the center-right GERB party, which took office on January 16 in coalition with the Socialists (BSP) and the populist "There Is Such a People" (ITN), survived a third motion of no confidence brought by the nationalist opposition. The vote was 130 against and 54 in favor, with 184 of the 240 deputies present. The nationalist party Vazrazhdane (Revival), backed by two other sovereigntist groups, Velichie (Grandeur) and MEC (the Bulgarian acronym for Morality, Unity, Honor), accused the cabinet of a "debacle in the country's fiscal policy." "The government is worsening fiscal imbalances and failing to take the urgent steps needed to restore the sustainability of Bulgaria's public finances," said Kostadin Kostadinov, leader of Vazrazhdane. He alleged that the cabinet had falsified Bulgaria's inflation data—putting 2024 inflation at 2.6 percent—ahead of the country's planned entry into the eurozone on January 1, 2026, insisting the real rate is much higher. Government MPs rejected the charges, calling the "flurry" of no-confidence votes merely "a waste of time." On April 3, the Zhelyazkov government defeated an initial no-confidence vote from the nationalists, who faulted it for its "refusal to pursue a sovereign foreign policy," particularly regarding the war in Ukraine. A second attempt on April 17, citing a "failure to fight corruption," also failed. Parliament has already been warned of a forthcoming fourth motion—this time from Velichie—accusing the cabinet of a "failure of environmental policy" in the face of a looming ecological catastrophe in Bulgaria.
