Woman in critical conditions in Slovenia after bear attack

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 28 - A 59-year-old woman is in critical condition in a Slovenian hospital after being attacked by a brown bear at a forest edge in Škofljica, a suburban municipality southeast of the capital Ljubljana, on Tuesday evening, according to Ljubljana police and Slovenian news agency STA. The woman was attacked while walking her dog in Gradišče, a settlement about 20 km from the centre of Ljubljana. According to police, she is still in critical condition at UKC Ljubljana Hospital. The attack occurred just days after the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning approved the culling of 206 brown bears this season as a way to control the thriving bear population and prevent human-bear conflict, according to STA.
