(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 07 APR - Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic on Sunday proposed naming a political novice doctor to lead the government after months of student-led anti-corruption protests brought down the last administration. Serbia has been in political turmoil since ex-prime minister Milos Vucevic and other top officials resigned in January over the protests sparked by a railway station disaster in which 16 people died. In a shock move, Vucic called on Djuro Macut, an endocrinologist and professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, to try to form a government. Macut, who is in his 60s, is a respected medical specialist, but has no political record. However, he did speak at an event for the new political movement that the president is forming. The Serbian government has been serving in a caretaker capacity since March 19 when parliament confirmed the prime minister's resignation. Macut has until April 18 to convince parliament to approve a new government. If he fails, Vucic may be forced to call new elections. (ANSA).
