EU commissioner in Hungary, focus on rule of law

(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, MAR 23 - The Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, will be in Budapest next week, where he will meet with representatives of the government, the judiciary, civil society and the media. On Monday, March 24, McGrath will meet with Hungary's Minister of Justice, Bence Tuzson; Minister for European Affairs, János Bóka; Supreme Court President, András Zsolt Varga; Attorney General, Péter Polt; and National Judicial Council President, Csaba Pecsenye. Discussions will focus on follow-up given from Hungary to the Rule of Law 2024 report. On Tuesday, Commissioner McGrath will meet with representatives of projects funded by the European Union's Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values program in Hungary. The commissioner will also engage in a dialogue with civil society organizations and interested media as part of the Annual Cycle on the Rule of law. These days Hungary is increasingly under scrutiny by the EU for the ban, decided by the government and approved by Parliament, of Pride demonstrations in the country. When asked about this, the Commission explained that after the Magyar Parliament's okay, "it is time to examine and evaluate the measure." (ANSA).
