Serbian president urges release of all documents on Novi Sad

(ANSA-AFP) - BELGRADE, JAN 25 - Serbia's President on Saturday urged the publication of all documents related to a fatal roof collapse at a train station, a key request of protesters who have been demonstrating across the country for weeks. Tens of thousands had marched in Belgrade in the latest protests demanding accountability for November's accident at Novi Sad. Friday's student-led demonstrations were supported by school closures, work stoppages by lawyers and small businesses, and a citizen's "general strike" urging people not stay away from work and refrain from purchases for a day. There have been almost daily roadblocks and protests across Serbia since 15 people died, including children, at the Novi Sad station on November 1, shortly after a three-year renovation, with many blaming corruption and poor construction oversight for the tragedy. More than a dozen people have been charged in connection with the accident, including former transport minister Goran Vesic, who resigned days after it occurred. The government has released some documents regarding the tragedy, but experts from the Faculty of Civil Engineering say they are incomplete. "I am calling on the government, the investor, the contractor, and the prosecutor's office to submit absolutely everything that has been requested," said President Aleksandar Vucic in a video message on Instagram. Vucic also promised increased police presence at future protests after a female student was seriously injured on Friday by a car trying to pass through protestors blocking a road. (ANSA-AFP).
