Drina dyed red, new pollution warning

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JAN 17 - A new pollution alert has been issued for the Drina, one of the most important rivers in the Balkans and a long stretch of the border between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia. In recent days, images of the Drina dyed red for kilometres have made an impact, upsetting coastal residents and prompting a swift response from Bosnian and Serbian officials. Analysis and sampling are underway, and the Serbian prosecutor's office is looking into a criminal complaint filed against an aluminium factory by a local environmentalist association. According to the most recent information, the disaster was caused by an accident in which heavy rainfall accelerated the melting of snow in Zvornik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the Serbian border, washing away bauxite deposits along the river's path.
