SRC SEE Project: 6th Steering Committee Meeting in Brussels

The 6th Steering Committee meeting of the project “Improving cooperation in South East Europe by actions for strengthening of the RCC” (SRC SEE) was held in Brussels on 2 December, 2013. It was attended by representatives of the CEI and RCC (Regional Cooperation Council)  as well as by representatives from the European Commission (i.e. Gerhard Schumann Hitzler, from the IPA Strategy and Regional Cooperation; Kjartan Bjornsonn, Head of the Unit D3, Regional Cooperation and Programmes - Section Regional Cooperation and Political Criteria).

Discussions focused on results reached since July 2013 and on forthcoming activities until March 2014, when project closure is forseen. The Secretary-Generals of both the CEI and RCC, Amb. Giovanni Caracciolo di Vietri and Mr. Goran Slilanovic respectively, expressed their highest appreciation for the renewed cooperation between the two organisations. They both stressed the importance of regional cooperation for Western Balkan countries, especially in the light of their future EU membership.

Great attention was also paid to the Closing Project Conference, foreseen to be held on 18 March, 2014 in Sarajevo. On that occasion the CEI and RCC will illustrate the results of this two-year cooperation period, where the RCC SEE 2020 Strategy was also strongly supported by the European Commission. The conference is going to address relevant stakeholders and urge them to follow up on the results achieved through the Project.

Schumann Hitzler gave an outlook of the results achieved so far in the EU enlargement  and underlined the process was still on track. He also praised the CEI for being the frontrunner in assisting the SEE and Western Balkan countries in achieving the necessary EU accession criteria.
