Delegation from National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Visits CEI and Research Centres of “Trieste Science System”

A high-level delegation from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (UNAS) visited Trieste on 28, 29 and 30 November upon invitation by the Secretariat of the Central European Initiative (CEI) and under the auspices of the CEI Ukrainian Presidency.

The delegation was composed of Prof. Anatoly G. Zagorodny, Vice President of UNAS, a position of ministerial ranking in Ukraine, and Prof. Yaroslav B. Blume, Director of the Institute of Food Biotechnology and Genomics. They were welcomed by the CEI Secretary General, Amb. Gerhard Pfanzelter, and then accompanied to the research centres of the “Trieste Science System”, where they met Prof. Carlo Rizzuto, President of Elettra-Synchrotron, Prof. Fernando Quevedo, Director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics “Abdus Salam” (ICTP), Dr. Francisco Baralle, Director General of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), and Mr. Enzo Moi, Director General of Area Science Park.

Beyond acknowledging the excellence of the scientific community in Trieste, traditionally devoted to international cooperation, the visit of the Ukrainian delegation followed-up on the achievements of the recent CEI Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology, held in Trieste on 19 September 2012. More specifically, concrete actions will be undertaken to encourage the participation of Ukraine in C-ERIC (the Central European Research Infrastructure Consortium), an integrated research infrastructure of pan-European quality and relevance, based on a network of laboratories located in different countries and led by Elettra-Synchrotron. Further progress will be made towards Ukrainian membership in the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB). Both initiatives, facilitated by the CEI in the context of its Science and Technology Network, aim at opening up the “Trieste Science System” to the scientific communities of CEI countries, as a precondition to support further cohesion in line with the CEI mission “regional cooperation for European integration”.
