(ANSA) - BELGRADE - In the European Union, agriculture appears not to be a profession for young people, with the notable exception of certain Central- and Eastern European countries, Austria, Poland and Slovakia. According to Eurostat data released today, 10.3 million people were working as farm managers in the EU in 2016, with only 11% of them being under the age of 40 years. However, Eurostat noted, young farmers were more common in Austria (22.2% of farm managers under 40 years old), Poland (20.3%) and Slovakia (19.0%). Above the EU average, also Estonia (15.5%), Germany (14.6%), Bulgaria (14.0%), Hungary (12.6%) and Lithuania (12.3%). Young farmers were particularly few in Cyprus (3.3% of all farm managers), Portugal (4.2%) and the United Kingdom (5.3%), Eurostat said, adding that farming is still dominated by men, with only 29% of farm managers in the EU being women.
