Kosovo, mayors already elected in 21 of 38 municipalities

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, OCT 13 - According to the Electoral Commission's most recent data on yesterday's local elections, the new mayor was elected in the first round in 21 of the 38 municipalities that voted. The decision in the other localities, including the capital Pristina and major cities such as Prizren, Peja, Jakova, and South Mitrovica, has been postponed until the November 9th runoff election. Srpska Lista (SL), Kosovo Serbs' largest party, has triumphed, with its candidates winning by landslide in the first round in nine of the ten Serb-majority municipalities. Among them are the municipalities of Zvecan, Zubin Potok, Leposavic, and North Mitrovica, all in northern Kosovo, where ethnic Albanian mayors were elected in April 2023 following a massive boycott by local Serbs. This sparked widespread Serb protests, often culminating in riots, violence, and clashes with police and KFOR troops. The SL candidate won 86.6% of the vote in Zvecan, 70.9% in Zubin Potok, 70.3% in Leposavic, and 60.2% in North Mitrovica. SL representatives also had significant success in Gracanica (62.5%), Strpce (59.4%), Novo Brdo (62.3%), Partes (89.8%), and Ranilug (71%). (ANSA).
