Slovenia, welfare spending almost a quarter of GDP

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 21 - Slovenia spent EUR 14.8 billion on social security programmes in 2023, accounting for nearly a quarter of GDP (23.1%), according to data from the national Statistics Office, Slovenian news agency STA reported today. Welfare spending increased by 7% over the previous year, but decreased by 1.1 percentage points as a percentage of GDP. The majority of welfare spending went towards old age, accounting for 9.1% of GDP or 39.6% of total expenditure for all social benefits. (ANSA).
