(ANSA) - PRISTINA, 11 LUG - In Kosovo, the 45th attempt today to elect the president of the new parliament born from the February 9 vote also failed. The stalemate and tug-of-war between the government and the opposition continues, as they again rejected in the chamber the proposal by the majority party Vetevendosje (Self-Determination, nationalist left) to hold a secret ballot. The proposal was put forward after, in recent weeks, the government's candidate Albulena Haxhiu had been rejected six times in a row, falling short of the 61 votes required for election. Prime Minister and Vetevendosje leader Albin Kurti has so far rejected calls to back another candidate. A new attempt to elect the speaker of parliament — which held its first constitutive session on April 15 — is scheduled for July 13. Efforts by Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani to meet with party leaders to try to foster an agreement have had no effect. On June 26, the local Constitutional Court intervened in the prolonged stalemate, which is preventing the formation of a new government and risks leading to early elections, by imposing a strict 30-day deadline to elect the president of the Assembly. The judges, however, did not specify what would happen if the impasse is not resolved within one month. (ANSA).
