33 participants from 25 organisations from 11 CEI Countries (Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia) gathered in Klagenfurt on 8-10 April to attend the first Danube:Future international workshop. Rectors from the Universities of Cluj-Napoca, Prague, Krems and Trieste were also invited to the event.
The gathering, focusing on the role of cultural and natural heritage for the sustainable development of the Danube Region, aimed to identify challenges and potential for interdisciplinary problems related to research, in order to create a knowledge basis for sustainable development.
Opening speeches were delivered by Prof. Oliver Vitouch, Rector of the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt and AARC President, and Prof. Doru Pamfil, Rector of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca and DRC President.
Prof. Jana Revedin, member of UNESCO research commissions, the GdF-Suez Urban Strategy and Innovation Council, the Rexel Foundation, and French Chevalier des Arts et des Letters, gave a keynote lecture on “The Rebel City: from radical Modernism to radicant Design”.
CEI funding and networking opportunities for regional cooperation were introduced by CEI Executive Officer, Alessandro Lombardo, who also presented the Danube-INCO.NET project.
The workshop will bring about a policy document identifying main research issues and ways to address them. Workshop participants actively contributed to a White Paper addressing the research needs in this context, with special emphasis on the humanities and social sciences. The White Paper will also be presented to relevant bodies of the Danube Strategy.
