EU-funded Project ADRIA A: Preliminary Studies on Italian Railroad Revitalisation Presented in Trieste

The CEI as lead partner of the EU-funded project “ADRIA A - Accessibility and Development for the Re-launch of the Inner Adriatic Area”, organised the presentation of the preliminary studies on the Italian railroad network, in cooperation with the project partner the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. The event held on the 15 April 2013 in Trieste at the premises of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region registered a wide participation of representatives of relevant project partners, such as the Slovene Ministry of Infrastructure and Spatial Planning, the Municipalities of Trieste and Gorizia, the Province of Trieste, EZIT, the ports of Trieste and of Koper, and the University of Ljubljana.   The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, project partner responsible for the feasibility studies on the Italian side of the metropolitan link presented the first preliminary results, in cooperation with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (the Italian railway provider). The study is focused on three main sub-activities: 1) revitalization of the railway network on the Trieste junction, 2) railway connection between the cities of Trieste (IT) and Koper(SLO); 3) railway connection between the cities of Gorizia (ITA) and Šempeter-Vrtojba/Nova Gorica (SLO).   The CEI expressed satisfaction with the results achieved so far and is looking forward to starting a collaboration with its Slovene counterpart. In this regard, Mr. Ljubo Žerak from the Slovene Ministry of Infrastructure and Spatial planning, the partner responsible for the feasibility studies on the Slovene railway network, provided an updated overview of their project activities. The Ministry has successfully launched a public tender for the selection of the external consultants who will be in charge of the planning. The selection procedure is now completed and the last formalities will be concluded within a couple of weeks, assured Mr. Žerak.   The Trieste event was the first of a series of technical meetings, which will be organised with the key actors in each specific railway connection.   The ADRIA A project aims at contributing to the accessibility and transport reorganisation in the entire cross-border area in order to form a unique integrated Italian – Slovene metropolitan transport area. The project is financed under the Cross-border cooperation programme Italy – Slovenia 2007-2013.     For more information: europrojects@cei.int ; www.adria-a.eu
