UN - CEI Cooperation: Draft Resolution Adopted by Consensus at the 67th Session of the General Assembly

On 19 November 2012, the UN General Assembly gathered in New York for its 40th Plenary Meeting within the 67th session (item 121) on Cooperation between the United Nations and Regional Organisations. The event was attended by several world regional and other organisations such as the Economic Cooperation Organization; the Organization for Security Cooperation in Europe; the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization; the Council of Europe and the Central European Initiative.

Regional organisations need to be in tune with the global agenda, said Gerhard Pfanzelter, CEI Secretary General, during the event. He added that their successful work contributed to that of the United Nations and the wider international community. He also stressed that Regional organisations could serve as powerful catalysts for advancing global cooperation, noting his organisation’s successful driving collaboration within the Central European region as well as with other regional bodies.   Moreover, the CEI Secretary General  underlined that the Central European Initiative also had  an impressive track record of cooperation with the United Nations, in particular with its specialised agencies, and that it worked closely with all major regional organisations and forums.  He stressed that ways to enhance cooperation among regional organizations, and in partnership with the United Nations, should be further explored.
In this regard, Pfanzelter proposed the creation of a global network under the umbrella of the United Nations, which would facilitate the exchange of know-how and best practices, and would help organisations to share their experiences. The draft resolution on Cooperation between the United Nations and the Central European Initiative (document A/67/L.6) -  introduced by Yuriy A. Sergeyev, Permanent Representative to the United Nations of Ukraine, holding the CEI Presidency -  was adopted by consensus, at the end of the meeting and co-sponsored by the CEI Member States.

According to this document the GA “requests the Secretary - General to submit to the General Assembly at its sixty-ninth session a report on the implementation of the present resolution” as well as “Decides to include in the provisional agenda of its sixty-ninth session the sub-item entitled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Central European Initiative”.
