In the context of the Research Fellowship Programme (CERES), the Central European Initiative (CEI) has just launched a Call for Applications (open until 30 April) offering 4 fellowships to post-doc researchers from CEI Member States. Selected applicants will have the opportunity to spend 12 months hosted by one of the 5 Trieste-based centres of excellence composing the CERES partnership: the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the Sincrotrone S.C.p.A., the Cluster in Biomedicine (CBM) and the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA).
Designed by the CEI with the aim to support transnational mobility as a contribution to the construction of the European Research Area (ERA), the CERES project is a unique opportunity for researchers from the CEI region to boost their careers in the framework of the “Trieste Science System”, a network of top-level centres and advanced research institutions with a dynamic international community.
The CERES project is co-funded by the EU Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) – Marie Curie Actions and represents an excellent example of synergy-against-fragmentation. Indeed, the CEI deems the creation of a European-wide open space for knowledge and technologies necessary to promote and fully exploit transnational synergies and technologies.
The total value of the project amounts to 1 million EUR (40% covered by EU funds, 30% by CEI; 30% by host institutions). Each fellowship awarded amounts to about 34.000 EUR. As a whole, the project envisages the disbursement of 30 fellowships in the period 2009 – 2012. Researchers are the key players in the construction of the ERA: therefore, they need to be provided with “better careers and more mobility”, as envisaged by the “European partnership for researchers”. In this regard, CERES represents a CEI success story that perfectly symbolises the CEI core mission of building bridges among peoples and connections across borders. In the time-frame 2009 – 2011, 82 applications were received from 16 CEI Member States, out of which 48 from non-EU CEI Member States (58%). The fact that the 3 CEI Eastern European Countries, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, altogether submitted 35% of the total number of applications deserves mentioning. 26 research project proposals were selected, out of which 15 from non-EU CEI Member States: Ukraine, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus and Moldova. The participation of women researchers has also been quite promising so far: the number of applications submitted by male and female researchers was identical, while the men/women ratio in terms of selected applications was 54-46. The overall CEI cooperation in the field of science and technology has been further enhanced by the CEI ministerial meeting on science and technology, held for the first time in Trieste in October 2011, which adopted the “Trieste Declaration”. The document was highly welcomed by the European Commission - DG for Research & Innovation which recognized the CEI effort to promote mobility of researchers from the CEI area towards the scientific institutions of the “Trieste Science System”. Encouraged by the high-quality outcomes of the CERES project, the CEI – in cooperation with its partners – has already outlined a new project proposal aimed at further contributing to transnational mobility of researchers. for more information: Research Fellowship Programme - (CERES)
