CEI Participates in Meeting of High-level Experts on Energy Organised by RCC

The Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) convened in Sarajevo on December 16, 2010, the 2nd Meeting of the Network of High-level Experts on Energy.

In introducing the discussion, Ms. Jelica Minić, Deputy Secretary General of the Organisation - the operational arm of the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) - underlined the rationale for the New Mid-term Strategy in view of the key challenges in the Western Balkans. She indicated Energy and Infrastructure as a top priority, underlining the positive contribution expected to come from SEDRI (Sustainable Energy Development Regional Initiative), jointly launched last October together with the CEI Secretariat.

In this context, Ms. Minic noted with satisfaction that SEDRI has been formally included among the actions to be implemented within the new EU Danube Region Strategy. Moreover, she foresaw a fruitful collaboration with the Energy Community Secretariat in Vienna.

CEI Alternate Secretary General, Mr. Giorgio Rosso Cicogna, confirmed the interest in the joint plan of action, also beyond the scheme envisaged by SEDRI. Recalling the conclusions of the recent CEI Ministerial Meeting on Economic Affairs, he emphasised that the participants agreed to address the many and complex problems related to Energy as a top priority for the Region and the CEI: intrinsic weakness and insufficient strategic decisions in this field was unanimously considered as an enormous obstacle on the path towards European integration - an area in which the ministries of the Member countries would welcome intensified regional cooperation.   After two intense working sessions, the Regional Network of High-level Experts on Energy - to which the CEI Secretariat will be associated on a permanent basis by contributing with additional expertise - will elaborate, in the next few months, a plan of action to be submitted to governments of member countries and to relevant stakeholders in the region. The section concerning eco-friendly renewable energy will refer to Next Generation Biofuels as a priority option. The CEI will support this strategic exercise of RCC through its own instruments of technical cooperation, thus providing a direct link with EBRD, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) based in London.   for more information: gostisa@cei-es.org
