(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 15 SET - "Italy is positively considering the possibility of replacing the Schengen suspension"—currently in place at the border between Italy and Slovenia—"with agreed-upon alternative measures that ensure security and combat irregular immigration" once the current extension expires, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said during a joint press conference with his Slovenian counterpart, Tone Kajzer. "I've already discussed this with Piantedosi," he stated. The plan calls for a joint cooperation model similar to that used "at the border with France, involving both Italian and French police officers." Kajzer referred to the border as "a space for collaboration and new opportunities." The current extension of controls at the borders will expire on December 18. "This is not a political stance or an attitude directed at anyone. Our top priority is maintaining internal and border security. There is no land border with Spain, but ships and planes arrive from there, and I believe this measure is justified given the dramatic situation in Ceuta," Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on the sidelines of a meeting with his Slovenian counterpart, Tone Kajzar. "We must not underestimate what has happened and what is still unfolding; thus, we must secure our borders." (ANSA).
