(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 3 - "The reinstatement of controls was decided not on the basis of legal provisions, but exclusively for propaganda purposes, to support the political choices of the national and regional governments," said ICS, the Italian Solidarity Consortium, which assists migrants, in a statement in response to the European Commission's request to end controls at the Italian-Slovenian border. "This is not a simple invitation, but, from a legal standpoint, a binding opinion, and failure to comply will result in the initiation of infringement proceedings for violation of European law," ICS states. Citing current regulations, ICS recalls that "the reintroduction of internal border controls can only occur 'in the event of a serious threat to public order or the internal security of a Member State'" and that "it can be maintained for a limited period, not exceeding one month and extendable up to a maximum of three months." As a result, ICS claims that the reintroduction of controls at the Italian-Slovenian border, "in force since October 2023," does not meet "any of the stringent legal requirements set out in the Schengen Regulation."
