In Bulgaria's elections, turnout on the rise

(ANSA) - SOFIA, APR 19 - In Bulgaria, where early legislative elections are being voted on today, turnout on the day is substantially high compared to previous elections. According to the Alpha Research agency's poll, turnout at 2 p.m. (1 p.m. Italian time) was 26.9 percent of voters compared to less than 20 percent in the 2024 elections. Although the law prohibits publishing exit polls before the end of the election day, polls from various agencies are leaking on the internet. As of 2:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. Italian time) the newly formed 'Progressive Bulgaria' party of former Republic President Rumen Radev would get 37.5 percent of the vote, followed by the Gerb Conservatives with 16.7 percent. The liberals in third place would garner 14.9 percent of the vote. "Today Bulgaria has a historic opportunity to break with the oligarchic model. I call on all Bulgarians to go out and vote. This is the only way to submerge the bought vote in a sea of free votes and take back our country," 'Progressive Bulgaria' party leader Rumen Radev said after voting. "It is unlikely that a regular government will be formed after today's vote. We will not be part of any coalition," Boyko Borissov, former premier and leader of the conservative Gerb party, said for his part at the polling station. Borissov previously ruled Bulgaria for about 10 years. Polls will close at 8 p.m. local time, 7 p.m. Italian time. after which the first exit polls will be known. (ANSA).
