(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 10 - Premier Giorgia Meloni said "investing in Ukraine is an investment in ourselves" in her speech at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome on Wednesday, adding that pledges worth over 10 billion euros had been made to the country's reconstruction. "Investing in Ukraine is an investment in ourselves because it concerns each and every one of us, which is why we should be proud of the result we are all achieving together today - nations, international organizations, financial institutions, local authorities, the business sector, civil society," she said. "Together we have made commitments for more than 10 billion euros with today's conference." She said the was satisfied with the response to the conference. "Such broad participation at this conference, at such a high level, sends an important message to the world," she said. "Each of us is here to do our part for a common goal, to look beyond the unbearable injustice that has been inflicted on the Ukrainian people for more than three years and to imagine a rebuilt, free, prosperous Ukraine. "We intend to achieve this goal not only by helping Ukraine defend itself, pursuing every effort for peace, but also by being able to imagine the aftermath, knowing how to build what has been destroyed - roads, bridges, schools, churches, hospitals", She stressed the importance of making sure that Russia does not benefit from the recovery effort in any way. "We will have to take into account those who did everything they could to prevent this barbarity and those who did not," she said. "That's why we want to work with Ukraine to prevent reconstruction benefitting those entities that helped finance the Russian war machine, as also written in the declaration of the G7 finance ministers."
