On 29 March 2025, the international conference "The Potential of Cargo Bikes to Transform Last-Mile Delivery" was held at the Destil Creative Hub in Tirana, Albania. The event brought together policymakers, urban planners, logistics experts and civil society representatives from CEI countries and the Western Balkans.
The event's objective was to evaluate the potential of cargo bikes in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of urban logistics, with a focus on addressing challenges related to congestion, air pollution, and last-mile delivery in rapidly expanding cities.
The Conference, organised by Active Mobility, provided a platform for the exchange of European best practices and the discussion of barriers to implementation, including infrastructure gaps and regulatory constraints. Case studies from multiple cities demonstrated the potential of cargo bikes to enhance existing transport systems, optimise operational efficiency and minimise environmental impact.
Discussions focused on enabling frameworks, public–private cooperation and practical steps to pilot cargo-bike solutions adapted to local contexts. The Conference concluded with the identification of follow-up actions to support the gradual integration of cargo bikes into urban logistics chains.
“Despite achieved progress, the transport sector in the CEI region still faces challenges such as uneven infrastructure development, environmental impacts, legislative fragmentation and connectivity gaps.
The CEI promotes continued efforts to support innovation and integrate sustainable practices for a modern and environmentally friendly transport system, enhancing economic development, sustainable mobility and overall competitiveness of its Member States.”
By encouraging dialogue and knowledge exchange among regional and international stakeholders, the event contributed to the advancement of innovative and sustainable transport solutions across the CEI region.
