CEI Parliamentary Cooperation Working Intensively in Spring 2012

Two important meetings of the CEI Parliamentary Dimension gathered the parliamentarians of the 18 CEI Member States: the Parliamentary Committee meeting, held on 24 May 2012 in Kiev (Ukraine), and the meeting of the General Committee on Cultural Affairs, held on 27 April 2012 in Bolzano (Italy).

The meeting in Kiev, held at the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament, focused on the importance of mobility and tourism of citizens as a means of promoting cooperation and good-neighbourly relations. The discussion included economic incentives for tourism development, legislative measures linked to the management of cultural and natural sites, and mechanisms of cooperation between government institutions, the private sector and NGOs. In his letter addressed to participants of the CEI Parliamentary Committee Meeting, H.E. Viktor Yanukovych, President of Ukraine, referring to the CEI Presidency in 2012, pointed out that his country considered “this mission an important one especially in the context of European integration aspirations”. The Final Resolution was adopted at the end of the meeting.

The meeting in Bolzano was organised on the initiative of Sen. Oskar Peterlini, who chairs the General Committee on Cultural Affairs, and focused on the “CEI Instrument for the Protection of Minority Rights”, a non binding instrument elaborated by the CEI Member States as early as 1994. The Parliamentarians from all CEI Member States called for a revitalisation of the CEI Minority Protection Instrument and for promotion of exchange of best practices in minority protection. They also underlined that autonomy, minority rights and cultural heritage are instruments of peace among the peoples. The Final Document is available.
