(ANSA) - BELGRADE, AUG 5 - Russia is attempting to influence the local elections in Germany this fall by posting a series of videos on X that aim to discredit centrist political parties opposed to Moscow. Only the far-right AfD and the BSW, founded by Sahra Wagenknecht, are immune to the propaganda behind the posts, which appear to be produced by German media groups. Security agencies have raised concerns about the interference, having identified several hundred videos of this nature as part of Russian hybrid attacks on the federal republic. This is a new chapter in Operation Matryoshka, which was previously observed during the federal election. Several of the identified posts have since been removed. According to the German government, Moscow has a long-term plan to influence Germany's political climate, destabilising the country. To accomplish this, it employs a number of state and non-state actors who form part of a veritable "disinformation ecosystem," as dpa describes. (ANSA).
