CEI Secretary General welcomes Italian EU Presidency

CEI Secretary General, Amb. Caracciolo di Vietri, welcomes the beginning of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and expresses the conviction that, in this capacity, Italy would contribute to enhancing further EU-CEI cooperation.

Conveying gratitude for the continuous and remarkable financial commitment and political support of Italy in promoting the CEI region and its European perspective, Amb. Caracciolo emphasises that EU enlargement continues to represent a significant theme in the programme of the Italian EU Presidency. “Italy, one of the four founding members of the CEI in 1989, will be able to play a decisive role in further promotion of EU integration, and the CEI will certainly continue to contribute to this process” Amb. Caracciolo says. He also recalls the strong and effective CEI-EBRD cooperation, thanks to the CEI Fund at the EBRD, fully financed by the Italian Government since 1992.

The Italian EU Presidency is strongly committed to ensuring the effectiveness of the EU Macro-regional Strategies. In this context, the CEI Secretary General highlights the CEI’s important role in establishing links between European Macro-regions and its particular interest in the evolving EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region, a region with great potential, especially in the light of the Western Balkan prospects for EU integration.
