CEI-EBRD Workshops Attract Great Interest Amid High Attendance

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) places special emphasis on capacity building in its countries of operations, but also in the business community of all shareholder countries, including Italy. Public procurement occupies a central place within the Bank’s core objectives of fostering efficient use of public funds, contributing to institutional strengthening, corporate governance and internal capacity building. In this framework, two Workshops exploring opportunities in the EBRD business cycle were held in Trieste (Italy) on 25-26 September 2012.

The workshops were organised by the Office for the CEI Fund at the EBRD, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Confindustria and the Association of Italian Engineering, Architectural and Technical Economic Consulting Organisations (OICE), in cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Ministry of Economy. The two events aimed to further enhance the participation of Italian companies in EBRD procurement opportunities – one of the missions of the CEI Fund at the EBRD, in its 20th year of operations and entirely financed by the Italian Government.

More than 80 representatives of Italian contractors, suppliers, manufacturers, industrial companies and associations attended the first event, Public Procurement in EBRD Projects. The objective of the Workshop was to better equip the participants to: (i) apply the advantages of sound procurement and the Bank’s Procurement Policies; (ii) promote and explain why the policies are important for the Bank’s clients, contractors and suppliers; and (iii) to identify main procurement issues during project implementation based on real case studies.

As Mr. Jan Jackholt, Director, Procurement Department, EBRD said: “Experience has showed us that whilst the private sector normally is technically and economically superior to implement infrastructure projects the private sector also needs support in finding the opportunities and understanding the rules of procurement processes”.

Over 60 representatives of consulting companies from Italy and other CEI Member States attended the second event Working with the EBRD: Workshop on Consultant Opportunities at EBRD: a full day workshop on opportunities for consultants to work with the EBRD and its clients.

"Italian consultants - said Ms. Dilek Macit, Director of Consultancy and Corporate Procurement Department of the EBRD - have always played an important role in the activities of the EBRD. The bank signed some 3,000 consultancy contracts for a total value of 170 million euros and Italy ranked second after the Great Britain and ahead of Russia and Germany for the number of contracts won by its consultancy organisations.”
