Albania: EU, concerned about new rules on press freedom

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, JANUARY 21 - "The EU supports the recommendations of the Council of Europe relating to press freedom in Albania," since the concerns about the situation of the sector in the country "are still relevant and should be addressed." EU spokeswoman Ana Pisonero launched this appeal regarding the controversial package of rules wanted by the government led by Edi Rama and approved by the Albanian parliament, which gives a government-appointed public authority the power to close information websites. Albanian President Ilir Meta vetoed the package, saying it is a "violation of press freedom." "Meta's decision is a chance to reverse course," said the EU spokeswoman. Brussels fully supports the Council of Europe's recommendations to Tirana calling for "the promotion of media self-regulation, an independent judicial review of complaints regarding media, and greater transparency for the country's media group owners."
