EU: Varhelyi, aiming for accession negotiations before May

(ANSA) - TIRANA, JANUARY 16 - The European Commission is aiming to start negotiations on accession to the European Union with Albania and North Macedonia, before the Zagreb summit, focusing on the Western Balkans, scheduled for May: the new EU enlargement commissioner, Hungarian Oliver Varhelyi said on a visit to Tirana after visiting Skopje. The lack of consensus between member countries on the two Balkan countries last October "was linked to the concern of some countries, underlined Varhelyi in the joint press conference with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. The enlargement commissioner explained that the new methodology of the enlargement negotiations, wanted by France "will create a new approach. The process will have to be more credible, more political, more predictable, and even more dynamic. We are working to draw up the proposal in this regard". Accompanied by the Albanian Prime Minister, Varhelyi visited some areas affected by the big earthquake last November 26, in the city of Durres, where there would be more than 600 seriously damaged buildings, as well as numerous houses declared unfit for human habitation. "We are supporting Albania and will continue to help you," said the EU commissioner, saying he is confident that he will be able to achieve "good results from the international donors' conference", organized by the President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and scheduled for February 17th in Brussels.
