Disabled excluded from EU vote, procedure against Slovenia

(ANSA) - LJUBLJANA, MAY 23 - The European Commission has launched an infringement procedure against Slovenia, as the country denies the possibility of voting in the European elections to 1,953 people with mental disabilities, in violation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, the daily Vecer reported. The Maribor-based newspaper wrote that almost 2,000 persons with intellectual disability have been removed from the electoral rolls, in direct violation also of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ratified by Slovenia. The direct commitment of Vlasta Nussdorfer, a former Ombudsperson, currently advisor of President Borut Pahor, brought no results, as there is no time to regulate the situation before the European elections.
