Italian military helicopter crashes in Bosnia, 3 feared dead

(ANSA) - ROME, 29 OTT - An Italian military helicopter crashed in Bosnia Thursday. The CH-47 chopper, deployed as part of Operation EUFOR Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina, crashed for reasons currently under investigation. Rescue teams responded immediately. The Ministry of Defence stated that, at this time, "it is not possible to provide further details, pending more precise information—particularly regarding the health status of the personnel involved." A local mayor said three people were dead and 12 injured. He did not say what their nationality was. The European Union Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR) has announced that an incident occurred today during a routine operation near the town of Gorica—located in the Brčko district, close to the Serbian border—involving the crash of an aircraft belonging to the international military mission. It remains unclear whether the three individuals on board have died, nor has their nationality been confirmed. According to unofficial reports, all three people on board perished in the crash. "EUFOR is conducting a full and thorough investigation into the incident and will provide further information once the facts have been established and it is appropriate to do so," stated the EU mission, which includes an Italian contingent. According to the mayor of Brčko, Siniša Milić, there are three fatalities and 12 injuries. EUFOR has urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or disinformation, and to seek updates on the incident exclusively through official channels. The news was confirmed to the ANSA news agency in Sarajevo by Brčko Mayor Siniša Milić. "Three people have died, and twelve have been injured. All have been treated at a hospital in Brčko. Medical staff remain on high alert," Milić added. Further details regarding the identities of those on board, as well as the causes of the crash, will be released once the authorities have completed the necessary checks and published the findings of the investigation.
