Arrests in Serbia, group allegedly planned unrest on election day: media

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 21 OTT - Serbian police are arresting individuals suspected of "planning unrest for election day" in Novi Sad, the birthplace of the student movement challenging Aleksandar Vučić in the upcoming election. In a separate operation, acting on orders from the Kraljevo Public Prosecutor's Office, authorities arrested an individual identified as M.A. The suspect is accused of "inciting a violent change to the constitutional order" and "planning to participate in riots on election day in Belgrade." The Serbian public broadcaster RTS reported that police had previously searched the suspect's premises and vehicles. RTS also reports, based on information obtained, that "it is suspected the group had planned to bring approximately 80 people to Belgrade on October 25 (election day) to incite unrest," and that "searches are currently underway at the suspects' buildings and premises." According to independent news outlets Vreme and N1, police searched the premises of activist Lazar Mišić in Belgrade yesterday. The arrests are also covered—citing RTS—by N1, a student-oriented outlet; in recent weeks, N1 has reported a veritable wave of targeted searches and judicial pressure. According to Vreme, the movement announced two days ago that they had intercepted information indicating that judicial authorities were recording their meetings and preparing a wave of arrests and searches, just ahead of the "Student List" rally scheduled for tomorrow at Slavija Square in Belgrade to mark the end of the election campaign.
