(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 2 - The Financial Times reports that Aleksandar Vučić aspires to follow the steps of Vladimir Putin. He, like the Russian leader, has stated unequivocally that he intends to resign as Serbian president nearly a year early, having already served two terms, with the goal of governing the country as prime minister, leading a party with a Putin-like appeal called United Serbia. During a pre-election rally in Belgrade last Saturday, Vučić stated that these are his "last weeks as president." However, he did not provide a date for early elections, which the opposition and student movement have demanded. Analysts speculate that Vučić may use these announcements to assess the political climate and withdraw his promise to resign if he believes the situation is not favourable. (ANSA).
