A new migration route ends on tiny Greek island

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAR 27 - Fears are growing in Greece about a new migration route that will see more than 800 people land on Gavdos, a small island with a population of less than 70, in the coming months. The 29-square-kilometer island off Europe's southernmost tip, closer to Africa than Athens, has emerged as the latest focal point for smugglers seeking to transport people to the west, according to The Guardian. According to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), of the 9,502 men, women, and children who have sought refuge in Greece since January, approximately 1,186 Egyptians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis have arrived in vessels that landed "in the vicinity" of Crete and Gavdos.
