Ex Oriente Film Workshop held in Prague

The 2018 edition of the Ex Oriente Film Workshop took place in Prague on 3-9 March, connecting East European filmmakers to key decision makers - producers, broadcasters, distributors and festival programmers worldwide. Director/producer teams were challenged to develop innovative projects and open their horizons to different forms of international collaboration.

During three residential workshops, the participating directors worked to develop the subject, narrative and the visual style of their projects, while producers learned more about the best ways to engage potential funders, and about the rules of the international market. Lectures and seminars on legal and financial issues in documentary filmmaking were also an important feature throughout the programme. Ex Oriente Film culminated in the final pitching sessions of East European creative projects at the East Doc Forum, featuring the final presentation before Europe's and North America‘s leading commissioning editors, distributors, buyers and film funding representatives. These activities are supplemented by the Follow-Up Programme - a yearlong chain of additional support and activities either for completed or on-going projects of the Ex Oriente Film workshop, providing former participants with ongoing professional consultancy and scholarships for international festivals and markets.

Ex Oriente Film was established in 2003 as the very first training initiative for East European creative documentary film. During its sixteen year existence, more than 150 documentary projects from Eastern and Central Europe went through the Ex Oriente Film workshop.

The Ex Oriente event is organised by the Institute of Documentary Film in partnership with the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.

This event is co-funded by the CEI Cooperation Fund.
