Adria A Project Presented at European Parliament

The Adria A Project was successfully presented at the European Parliament on 23 May in Brussels during an event co-organised by the CEI and hosted by Hon. Antonio Cancian (Member of the Transport and Tourism Committee of the European Parliament). The ADRIA A project - funded under the Cross-border cooperation programme Italy – Slovenia 2007-2013 - aims at contributing to the accessibility and transport reorganisation in the entire cross-border area in order to form an integrated Italian – Slovene metropolitan transport area.

Under the CEI Secretariat’s guidance, Lead Partner of this project, Adria A’s partnership embraces 27 partners among which the Italian and Slovene Ministries of Transport and Environment, local administration authorities (Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto Regions, Provinces and Municipalities), and the main passenger traffic generators (ports and airports).

The overall objective of the meeting was to present the first results of the project and discuss future actions. Through these actions the cross-border cooperation and the development of an efficient metropolitan system entirely interlinked with the development of the Ten-T network will be fostered. another aims of the meeting was also to encourage synergies and collaboration between airports, ports, the connections to the Priority Project 6, and to set up a permanent forum of Metropolitan cities.

The event, chaired by Hon. Cancian, was attended by several Italian and Slovenian Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).  Hon. Cancian in his opening speech stressed the importance of connecting the cross-border areas with the trans-European corridors which will create the conditions for a sustainable growth. Hon. Fajon, Slovenian MEP, underlined the importance of the new allocation of European funds within the cross-border cooperation between Italy and Slovenia, especially in the field of mobility between cross-border Municipalities.

CEI Secretary General, Amb. Pfanzelter, briefly introduced the activities of the CEI and highlighted the importance of the ADRIA A project as the flagship initiative in the region. He also pointed out that thanks to the CEI and within the context of the Adria A the first Italian-Slovenian European Group of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) was established.

On 24th the ADRIA A partnership met on the premises of the Representative Office of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region to the European Union in Brussels in order to kick start the activities of the forum of the metropolitan cities.
