Romania: 330 mln plan for biggest steel plant

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, NOVEMBER 13 - The British-Indian investor Sanjeev Gupta plans to increase the production by over 50% at the Romanian biggest steel plant in Galati, Gupta said in an interview with the Ziarul Financiar, the portal Romania Insider reported. Gupta's Liberty Steel group will take over the ArcelorMittal Galati plant in a transaction expected to be completed in early 2019, local media reported. Gupta underlined that the group has a has an investment plan for Galati of 330 million euro for the next 3-5 years and "we have the clear intention of increasing the annual production from 2 million tons of steel to 3 million." The new owner will also restart a furnace and modernize the plant, Gupta said, adding that the biggest challenge currently is poor infrastructure, but "we will support Romania through our infrastructure division," he said, quoted by Romania Insider.
